While touring the Merinos factory in Gaziantep, İbrahim Erdemoğlu shared with me two pieces of advice his father, Mehmet Erdemoğlu, left for his children: "Stay away from politics, don't get involved with football." His children followed these two pieces of advice, and they established a family constitution by which they reinvested at least 90% of their earnings. The story, which began with two carpet looms, stretched from Merinos to SASA, and another tradition inherited from their father continued: giving back to society. They built mosques, Alevi community centers, schools, and dormitories…

Merinos, which accounts for 7% of the world's machine-made carpet production, is going public with a 50% stake held by international investors. This initial public offering by Erdemoğlu Holding, which also owns SASA, will mark a first for the stock market since 2017. Erdemoğlu Holding Yönetim Kurulu Başkanı İbrahim Erdemoğlu, 25 milyar dolarlık Yumurtalık rafineri ve entegre kimya tesisi için ulusal ve uluslararası fonlarla görüşmeler yürüttüklerini belirterek, Türkiye'nin bölge ülkeleriyle işbirliği içinde dünyanın en büyük entegre kimya endüstrisi merkezlerinden biri olabileceğini söyledi.
Erdemoğlu, Yumurtalık projesi kapsamında geçen yıl Vitol ile anlaşma yaptıklarını, Katarlı yatırımcıların yanı sıra Suudi Arabistanlı yatırımcılar ve Aramco'nun da projeye ilgi gösterdiğini belirtti.

Erdemoğlu Holding is preparing to take Merinos public. Stating that they are ready to take this step as of the June 2026 financial results, Chairman of Merinos, Mehmet Erdemoğlu said, "The amount of orders we receive from abroad has increased by 50%. We are currently hiring new workers. We are increasing our capacity. We are bringing our idle capacities into operation. Being reliable, being able to produce in high quantities at low cost, and being able to deliver the product on time are becoming increasingly important."

Turkey is the global leader in the machine-made carpet sector, with a 65 percent market share. In terms of production capacity, Turkey even ranks ahead of China. Gaziantep is the province where machine-made carpets are primarily produced. At the company level, Merinos Halı, a subsidiary of Erdemoğlu Holding, holds the top position in both the Turkish and global machine-made carpet markets, with a market share of approximately 7 percent. The company, which exports to more than 100 countries, is a supplier to the world’s largest retail chains, such as Walmart and IKEA. Ninety percent of the carpets produced at the integrated facility in Gaziantep are exported, while 10 percent are sold in the domestic market. Ninety-two percent of revenue comes from exports.

I was at the Merinos factory in Gaziantep. I toured the production lines with İbrahim Erdemoğlu and Mehmet Erdemoğlu, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Merinos, and discussed the group’s plans for the new period. The most important topic on the agenda was the initial public offering. Their goal is to allocate more than 50 percent of the offering to foreign institutional investors. As the door opens to a new major test for international investors in Turkey’s capital markets following Mavi and Enerjisa, I heard firsthand about the industrial journey that spans from Merinos to SASA, a journey that took the company from 250,000 dollars in revenue to 3 billion dollars.

This week I visited the world's largest carpet factory, Merinos's facility in Gaziantep. The figures are impressive: an annual production capacity of 80 million square meters. Sales to over 100 countries through retail chains from IKEA to Walmart, with 92% of turnover being exports... Merinos alone produces approximately 7% of the world's machine-made carpets.
